Rug Size Guide

The right rug size pulls a room together; the wrong one makes furniture look like it is floating. This guide shows the sizes we stock, the size groups used in our filters, and simple rules for every room — so you can order with confidence.

How our size groups work

Every rug on Rugs Depot is tagged with a size group, so the Size filter works the same way across London stock, made-to-order and partner rugs:

  • Small — up to 1.5 m², for example 60 × 100 cm and 80 × 150 cm.
  • Medium — 1.5 to 2.9 m², for example 100 × 200 cm and 120 × 180 cm.
  • Large — 2.9 to 4.2 m², for example 155 × 230 cm and 160 × 230 cm.
  • Extra large — more than 4.2 m², for example 200 × 290 cm and 200 × 300 cm.
  • Runner — any rug at least 2.4 times longer than it is wide.
  • Round — circular rugs, measured by diameter.

Living room rug size

Choose one of three layouts, then size the rug to your sofa:

  • Front legs on (the most popular): the front legs of the sofa and chairs rest on the rug. For a 2–3 seat sofa this usually means 155 × 230 cm.
  • All legs on: every piece of furniture sits on the rug, ideally with 15–20 cm of rug beyond each end of the sofa. Go for 200 × 300 cm; it suits corner sofas and open-plan rooms.
  • Floating: the rug sits under the coffee table only. 120 × 180 cm works in small rooms; make sure it is wider than the coffee table.

Leave 30–60 cm of bare floor between the rug and the walls. A rug that touches the skirting board looks like fitted carpet; one that is too small makes the room feel smaller.

Dining room rug size

Chairs should stay on the rug when they are pulled out, so the rug needs to extend about 60–75 cm beyond the table on every side. Measure your table and add 120–150 cm to its length and width.

  • 4-seat table: 155 × 230 cm or a 160 cm round under a round table.
  • 6-seat table: 200 × 300 cm or a 200 cm round.

Low, flat piles are easiest under dining chairs, and washable rugs make spills less stressful.

Bedroom rug size

  • Under the bed: a 155 × 230 cm rug placed across the lower two-thirds of a double bed, or 200 × 300 cm for a king, leaves soft floor on both sides.
  • Either side: two 80 × 150 cm rugs or two runners give you a soft first step without moving the bed.
  • At the foot: a 100 × 200 cm rug or a runner across the end of the bed frames a bench or blanket box.

Hallways, landings & runners

Leave roughly 10–15 cm of floor on each side of a runner, and 20–30 cm at each end so doors open freely. Most hallways suit an 80 × 300 cm runner; wider ones take 100 × 300 cm. In long hallways, two runners with a small gap look intentional. Shop runner rugs.

Kitchens, kids rooms & entrances

  • Kitchen: an 80 × 150 cm rug in front of the sink or an 80 × 300 cm runner along a galley kitchen. Choose a washable kitchen rug.
  • Kids room: 120 × 180 cm or 155 × 230 cm gives a soft play area; a 160 cm round suits a nursery. See kids rugs.
  • Entrance: a 60 × 100 cm rug catches the first steps inside.

How to measure for a rug

  1. Measure the room and note doors, radiators and fireplaces.
  2. Decide on the layout (front legs on, all legs on, or floating).
  3. Mark the rug outline on the floor with masking tape and live with it for a day.
  4. Pick the closest size — if you are between two sizes, the larger one almost always looks better.

Rug size FAQs

What is the most popular rug size in the UK?

155 × 230 cm (about 5 × 8 ft) is the most versatile size. It fits most living rooms with a 2–3 seat sofa and sits well under a double bed.

What size rug do I need for a 3-seater sofa?

At least 155 × 230 cm with the front legs on the rug. If you want all the furniture on the rug, choose 200 × 300 cm.

What size runner do I need for a hallway?

Measure the hallway width and subtract 20–30 cm. Most UK hallways suit an 80 cm wide runner; 300 cm long runners cover most hallways and landings.

Are rug sizes exact?

Woven and printed rugs can vary slightly from the stated size, typically by a few centimetres. Check the exact size on each product page before ordering for a tight space.
