Striped Rugs: The Easy Pattern That Changes a Room

Timeworn Floral Stripe Lagoon & Berry Distressed Washable Rug in a bright living room

Stripes are the most architectural of patterns. Unlike florals or medallions, they point somewhere, and that direction changes how a room reads before anyone has noticed the colours. Used thoughtfully, a striped rug can stretch a narrow hall, widen a squat sitting room or bring order to a busy open-plan space. This guide explains how direction and stripe scale work, which colours suit which rooms, and how to mix stripes with other patterns without chaos.

Direction: the rule that changes everything

The eye follows a stripe along its length. That simple fact gives you two levers.

  • Stripes running away from you (along the length of the room) make the space feel longer and draw the eye towards a focal point, such as a window or fireplace.
  • Stripes running across the room make it feel wider and slow the eye down, which helps a long, narrow room feel less like a corridor.

Before buying, stand in the doorway and decide what you want the room to do. In a square room either direction works; choose the one that leads the eye to the feature you are proudest of.

The stripe rug hallway trick

Hallways are where direction matters most. A runner with stripes along its length exaggerates length, which is perfect for a short hall but can make a long Victorian corridor feel tunnel-like. In that case, a design with bands running across the runner breaks up the length into steps, like a ladder, and makes the space feel more generous. The stripe rug hallway approach also works on landings and in galley kitchens. Browse our hallway runners for widths that leave 10–15 cm of floor either side.

Stripe scale and spacing

The width of the stripes matters as much as their direction.

  1. Fine stripes and ticking read as texture from a distance. They are calm, suit bedrooms and small rooms, and pair well with other patterns.
  2. Medium bands of 5–15 cm are the most versatile and suit most living rooms.
  3. Bold, wide bands make a statement and need space; they work best in a large room on a 200×300 cm rug.
  4. Irregular kilim-style stripes, with varied widths and small motifs, feel relaxed and bohemian.

Styling a striped rug living room

In a striped rug living room, let the rug set the palette. Pick the quietest colour in the stripe for the walls and the boldest for one or two accents. Plain upholstery keeps things calm; if you want a patterned cushion, choose a floral or a check at a clearly different scale. A 160×230 cm rug is the usual size for a terrace sitting room, with the sofa's front legs on it. Our rug size guide has more layouts, and our striped rugs collection covers every scale.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Laying a stripe slightly off-square to walls; unlike a medallion, it shows instantly.
  • Pairing two stripes of the same width; vary scale or the room will buzz.
  • Choosing high-contrast black and white for a small room, which can feel restless. Softer colourways sit back more easily.

Frequently asked questions

Which way should a striped rug go?

Run stripes lengthways to make a room feel longer, or across to make it feel wider. In hallways, crossways stripes stop a long corridor feeling tunnel-like.

Do stripes make a room look bigger?

They can. Stripes running across a narrow room visually widen it, and fine, soft stripes make small rooms feel calm and open.

Can I mix stripes with floral patterns?

Yes, provided the scales differ. Fine stripes partner well with large florals, and bold stripes with small prints.

Choose your direction first and your colour second, and a stripe will quietly reshape the room around it. Delivery is free on every order.
