Renting a flat with oatmeal carpet you didn't choose? Living with a perfectly good fitted carpet that has simply gone a bit dull? Plenty of people assume rugs are only for hard floors, but a rug on carpet is a long-established decorating trick, and done well it looks completely deliberate. It can disguise wear, protect the carpet underneath, bring in pattern and colour, and break a large room into zones. This guide explains when it works, how to pick the right texture and size, how to stop the rug creeping, and the colours that make the pairing look intentional rather than accidental.
Yes, and there are several good reasons to:
The only real caution is very deep, shaggy carpet, where a rug can sink and wrinkle. On standard short or medium pile carpet, it works beautifully.
The secret of layering rug over carpet is contrast. If the rug and carpet are too similar in colour and texture, the rug looks like a mistake. Aim for a clear difference in at least one of these:
This echoes the intentional layering that forecasters see in homes now: a large calm base with a smaller patterned rug on top. Here, your carpet simply plays the role of the base.

Size the rug for the furniture, not the room. In a living room, a 160×230 cm rug usually works in front of a three-seater, with the front legs of the sofa on it. In a bedroom, try 160×230 cm under the lower two-thirds of a double bed, or a pair of runners either side. Leave plenty of carpet visible around the edges so the layering is obvious; a rug that almost fills the room looks like a second carpet. Our rug size guide covers more layouts.
The most common complaint is creep: the rug slowly walks across the room or rucks up into ridges. That happens because carpet pile has a direction, and every footstep nudges the rug along it. To prevent it:

Vacuum the rug regularly, and lift it every few weeks to vacuum the carpet underneath, where dust collects. A washable top rug makes life easier: our designer washable rugs go in the machine at 30°C on a gentle cycle and are air dried flat, so the layer that takes the spills can be cleaned without calling in a carpet cleaner. Yes. It protects the carpet, adds colour and zones a room. Choose a rug flatter than the carpet and use a carpet-specific underlay.
Flat, low rugs with a clear contrast in colour or pattern, such as kilim-style, Persian-inspired or vintage designs.
Generally not. Lift it occasionally to vacuum underneath and check for any colour difference where light hits the exposed carpet.
A rug on carpet is a quick, renter-friendly way to change a room. Choose contrast, keep it flat and anchored, and the result looks considered rather than accidental.
