The kitchen is where we stand longest and spill most, so it is odd how often it is the last room to get a rug. Hard floors such as tile, stone and luxury vinyl are practical, but they can feel cold underfoot and make a room echo. The right kitchen rug fixes both problems and brings colour and pattern to a space that is often all white units and stainless steel. The catch, of course, is practicality: anything on a kitchen floor needs to cope with crumbs, splashes and the occasional dropped pasta sauce. Here is how to choose well.
Think about where you actually stand. In most kitchens there are three hotspots: in front of the sink, in front of the hob and along the main walkway between them. A rug in one or more of these places gives comfort exactly where you need it.
Galley kitchens are common in British terraces and flats, and they are made for a kitchen runner. A long rug visually stretches the space and softens the walkway between two rows of units.
Browse our runner rugs for long formats.

Being able to wash it takes the stress out of spills. Our designer washable rugs are printed polyester chenille on a woven cotton backing, made to go in the washing machine at 30°C on a gentle cycle. Air dry them flat and do not tumble dry. Smaller sizes are the easiest to wash at home; for larger rugs, check your drum capacity first.
Between washes, a weekly vacuum and an immediate blot on spills keep things fresh. Shake small rugs outside to remove crumbs. For the full range, see our machine washable rugs.
Plain, pale rugs show every mark in a kitchen. Busy, mid-tone patterns are far more forgiving:
Pair the rug's colours with something already in the kitchen: the timber of a worktop, a tiled splashback or a painted island.

A ribboned Aubusson-inspired design in indigo and rust with black accents. It is a striking choice beside navy units or a white kitchen with brass taps, and its pattern is forgiving of busy family life.
Peacock blue and ochre in a formal garden-inspired pattern. It suits kitchen-diners with a farmhouse table, especially when you repeat the ochre in a pendant light or ceramics.
For a cheerful pop of colour, this fuchsia and purple kilim stripe is a washable flatweave chenille from £29. It is London stock in five sizes, from 60×90 cm, dispatched within 1–2 business days.
Yes, as long as you choose a practical one. A washable design with a busy pattern adds comfort and colour without being a worry.
Leave 10–15 cm of floor on each side and about 30 cm at each end. In most galley kitchens, an 80×300 cm runner fits well.
For our designer washable rugs, wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle, then air dry flat. Do not tumble dry. Vacuum weekly and blot spills straight away.
A well-chosen rug makes the hardest-working room in the house more comfortable and more beautiful. Choose a forgiving pattern, size it carefully and enjoy the softness underfoot.
