The tree is out on the pavement, the fairy lights are back in the loft and the living room suddenly looks both emptier and somehow shabbier than it did in November. January is a strange month for a home, but it is also the perfect moment for small changes. You don't need a renovation budget, just a weekend or two and a clear plan. These ten home refresh ideas are affordable, quick and designed to make the house feel lighter, calmer and more like the year ahead rather than the one just gone.
1. Do one room at a time. A January declutter works best in small, finishable chunks. Pick the room you use most, set a timer for an hour and sort everything into keep, donate, recycle and move elsewhere. Seeing one room finished builds momentum far better than half-emptying five.
2. Clear the surfaces. Kitchen worktops, the hall table and the coffee table carry the most visual noise. Leave only what you use daily, plus one or two things you love. Christmas gifts that need a home? Decide now, before they settle permanently on the sideboard.
3. Swap the rug. Nothing changes a room as quickly. After a winter of muddy boots and dropped mince pies, a fresh rug resets the space. Light, airy designs in ivory, sage or dusty blue counter the darkness of January, while organic shapes and soft abstracts feel calm and modern. Check the size before you buy: under a three-seater sofa, 160×230 cm or 155×230 cm usually lets the front legs sit on the rug. Our rug size guide has more layouts.
4. Wash what you already have. If your rugs are machine washable, now is the time. Our designer washable rugs go in at 30°C on a gentle cycle and are air dried flat; it is remarkable how much brighter a washed rug looks.

5. Change the bulbs. Swap cold, bright bulbs for warm white in living areas, and add a table lamp to any corner that sits in darkness after 4pm. Layers of low light make winter evenings feel much cosier.
6. Paint one thing. Not a whole room: a door, a bookcase, a radiator or a single wall. Forecasters expect warmer, earthier palettes to take over from grey, and WGSN and Coloro have named Luminous Blue their 2027 colour of the year, so a soft blue or a warm sage both feel current.
7. Move the furniture. Free and surprisingly effective. Pull the sofa away from the wall, turn a chair towards the window, or swap two pieces between rooms. Fresh eyes on old furniture can do as much as buying new.
8. Refresh the cushions and throws. Pack away the festive reds and replace them with lighter linens, textured knits or a new colour pulled from your rug. Two or three new cushion covers are enough to shift a whole sofa.
9. Upgrade the bed. Fresh bedding in a calm palette, a new throw at the foot of the bed and a soft rug either side for cold mornings: a new year home makeover can start in the bedroom, where rest matters most in January. An 80×150 cm rug on each side of a double is an easy win.

10. Make a short list. Walk round the house with a notebook and write down the three things that bother you most, from the hallway that always feels dark to the dining chairs that wobble. Tackle one a month. Small, steady progress is far more satisfying than a frantic weekend in March.
