Rope-handled mirrors, anchor cushions and painted signs pointing to the beach: coastal decorating has a cliché problem. Yet the feeling people want from a coastal living room is real and worth chasing. It is the airiness of a room by the sea, the faded blues of a sky after rain, the warmth of sand underfoot and the relaxed sense that nothing here is too precious. You can have all of that in a Bristol terrace or a Leeds flat without a single nautical motif. This guide covers the palette, the textures, how to choose a coastal rug and the practical points that matter in real seaside homes.
Think atmosphere rather than theme. The modern coastal room is light, slightly weathered and comfortable. Furniture is relaxed, with loose linen covers and a deep sofa. Surfaces are matt, not glossy. Colours look as though they have been softened by sun and salt.
It also helps to think British rather than Caribbean. Our coasts, from Cornwall to Norfolk, have grey-green seas, pale shingle, lichen-covered rock and wide, changeable skies. That palette is subtler than turquoise and white, and much easier to live with all year round.
Build from these families:
Use sand as the base, blues as the second colour and warm accents sparingly.

Texture is what makes a room feel coastal without saying so. Choose limewashed or chalky paint, weathered oak, rattan, rush seating, stoneware and heavy linen. One beautiful found object, such as a piece of driftwood or a stoneware jug of dried grasses, says more than a shelf full of shells.
Faded and distressed patterns help, too. A rug that looks gently sun-bleached sits naturally among worn timber and linen in a way a crisp, brand-new print never quite does.
The best coastal rug combines a soft palette with practicality. Look for faded blues with warm undertones, or calm sand-coloured designs with subtle relief. Distressed and vintage-style patterns forgive sand, dog paws and wet boots far better than plain pale rugs.
For size, a living room rug should at least hold the front legs of the sofa: 155×230 cm or 160×230 cm in most terraces, 200×300 cm or 200×290 cm in larger rooms. In a hallway that sees beach traffic, a machine washable runner is far easier to keep fresh. Browse our machine washable rugs for easy-care options.

If you own or rent a seaside home, practicality comes first. Sand gets everywhere, damp coats pile up by the door and dogs come in from the beach. Good beach house decor in the UK means slipcovers that wash, hard floors with rugs that can go in the machine, plenty of hooks and baskets, and colours that do not show every grain of sand. Mid-tone, patterned rugs are far more forgiving than solid cream, and they still keep the room light.

Peach, cobalt and jade in a distressed floral mosaic, like colours softened by sea air. It works with sand-coloured linen and weathered oak. Machine washable at 30°C, made to order in 10 sizes from £50.
Sky blue, indigo and rust in a Moorish star geometric: the blue-and-warm balance coastal rooms need. Try it in a hallway as a runner, or under a dining table with rush-seated chairs.
Azure, gold and plum in a faded, vintage-style garden design. It brings depth to a coastal sitting room and looks lovely with chalky blue walls and brass.
Cream and beige in a modern triangle relief, the sand tone of the scheme. A cut-pile polypropylene and polyester rug of about 7 mm, from £49, dispatched from our Enfield warehouse within 1–2 business days.
Choose faded blues with warm accents or calm sand-toned designs. Distressed or textured patterns suit the relaxed, weathered mood and hide everyday marks.
Skip themed accessories and focus on colour, light and texture: chalky paint, linen, rattan, weathered wood and a softly faded rug.
Muted blues, sand, oat and stone, with small touches of rust, coral or sea-green. British coastal palettes are softer than bright turquoise and white.
Coastal style is a mood you can bring anywhere. Start with the floor, keep the blues soft and the textures honest, and let the room breathe. Find more ideas in our blue rugs collection.
